Open Source

Free for low- and middle-income countries. As it should be.

Our software is free and open-source.

We don’t believe in empire building; we believe in community building.

When countries decide to use our software, they should not be stuck with us. They should work with us only for as long as we provide them benefit, and be free to work with whoever they like in the future—without having to change their software.

We also know that all developers benefit from the work of a global community of open-source software, and that contributing to that global pool is a moral imperative, just like paying taxes to maintain roads.

Finally we believe that if make and deliver good software, countries and organisations which have the means will be willing to pay for that, so we don’t need to rely on compulsory licence fees to sustain ourselves.

License

Tamanu and Tupaia are distributed under the GNU General Public Licence (Version 3).

In short, we welcome the community to do anything with our code, so long as it doesn’t involve redistributing it under a closed source licence.

In particular, we encourage contributions from partner countries, and for interested contributors to get in touch via our Contact page.

Tamanu

Our FHIR API is open-source but is available under a Business Source License (BSL v1.1). The FHIR API is provided free of cost, irrevocably, to all low- and middle-income countries.

Tamanu doesn’t require the FHIR API to work. The API only supports integration with third-party software. If you would like more information on our API licence (and our decision-making process around that licensing), please get in contact.

BES’ headquarters are on Wurundjeri land near Merri Creek in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. For thousands of years, Merri Creek provided Aboriginal people with many of the essentials of their day-to-day lives including water, timber and bark for building shelters, plant life for food and medicinal purposes, and animals for food.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people who are the Traditional Custodians of that Land. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Kulin Nation and extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia.

Our acknowledgements extend to the traditional owners of the lands on which we work across the Pacific—including Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), where we recognise Māori as the Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa. BES commits to upholding their tino rangatiratanga over their lands, resources and taonga as described by te Tiriti o Waitangi.
